D'Ann Somerall, DNP, MSN, BSN, MAEd, FNP-BC

Dr. D'Ann Somerall is a dedicated healthcare professional respected for her expertise both as a faculty member at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing (SON) and as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Somerall earned her DNP, MSN, BSN, MAEd, and BA in education from UAB.

As a faculty member at the UAB SON, Dr. Somerall plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of nursing professionals. She served as the specialty track coordinator for the Family Nurse Practitioner program, educating more than 1100 FNPs during her career. She most recently left retirement to return to full-time teaching to mentor young educators in best practices for educating future NPs. Through her mentorship, she fosters critical thinking, compassion, and clinical proficiency among her students and mentees, preparing them to meet the challenges of modern healthcare and educating young minds with confidence and competence.

Dr. Somerall serves as a passionate advocate for nurse practitioners. Because of this passion, she has become highly involved in the legislative processes, connecting with Alabama legislators to advance the role of NPs throughout the state. She currently is serving as a Health Policy Fellow Mentor for one of the first Health Policy Fellow programs in the country located at a School of Nursing.

Dr. Somerall is honored to be a founding member of the National Association for Family Nurse Practitioners and believes NAFNP will create opportunities for collaboration, problem-solving, education and networking among FNPs.
